Winter Road Maintenance

Were the winter driving conditions poor? Was the development of ice on the roadway foreseeable? What information did the winter maintenance provider have when making operational decisions? Were the performed winter maintenance operations reasonable, given the expected and real-time weather conditions? Our team takes a holistic approach to winter road maintenance investigations to deliver comprehensive findings and answer these questions and more. We undertake detailed analyses of the available weather forecasts, real-time meteorological data, and reported road conditions to assess the operational and deployment decisions made by the winter maintenance provider. We consider these decisions in the context of the unique contract in place and the applicable industry standards and guidelines for the relevant jurisdiction. While the specific techniques and best practices are often dependent on local conditions and resources, the core scientific principles of snow and ice management are universal. Our team of engineers and scientists is well versed in the latest technologies for road monitoring, anti-icing, and de-icing. We investigate the roadway friction and the condition of the roadway at the incident time, including analysis of the physical evidence and assessment of what the road conditions should have been, depending on the level of service. Working in collaboration with 30 Forensic Engineering’s Collision Reconstruction, Biomechanics & Personal Injury, and Transportation Safety groups allows us to provide value-added assessments to fully understand the role winter road maintenance may have played with respect to causation.
